Six-Week AI English Program Boosts Learning Gains in Nigeria

A randomized study across nine schools in Edo State shows measurable learning gains from a six-week supervised English training program using the AI chatbot Copilot. In August 2025, Nigeria's Teachers Registration Council (TRCN) and GMind AI announced a nationwide platform for 1.5 million Nigerian teachers.

According to Technext, an agreement between TRCN and GMind AI was signed on August 13, 2025, and calls for a contextualized, simulation-capable platform connecting Nigeria's curriculum with local history and culture. TRCN Registrar Dr. Ronke Soyombo explained at the signing in Abuja that the initiative would transform lesson preparation and improve teaching quality nationwide.

What the platform is designed to deliver

The platform will bundle more than 30 AI-powered teaching tools, dashboards, and training modules and is designed primarily for mobile devices and use without continuous internet. It provides AI-generated lesson plans, assessment tools, simulations, and student engagement strategies tailored to Nigerian learners. For teachers with limited ICT knowledge, ready-to-use lesson plans are available, while digitally proficient teachers receive AI-generated plans with simulations. Training occurs through the GMind AI Academy with short learning units, certifications, and workshops.

artificial intelligence

Nigeria's education system serves over 30 million learners through 1.5 million teachers, many with limited digital access, high workloads, and insufficient training aligned with modern curricula. The Federal Ministry of Education's 2025 curriculum reform introducing AI and digital literacy heightened the urgency to prepare teachers for technology-enabled learning.

What a controlled trial actually shows

According to VoxDev, researchers tested a six-week afternoon program at nine public secondary schools in Edo State in which students worked in pairs with the free version of Microsoft Copilot based on GPT-4 while teachers introduced topics and supervised sessions. Students offered the program outperformed the control group on a written final English assessment, as well as AI knowledge and digital skills. Total learning gains were approximately 0.3 standard deviations according to VoxDev, with English gains around 0.24. Participating students also performed better on regular year-end exams that extended far beyond the six-week curriculum. When converted to Equivalent Years of Schooling, the learning gains represented nearly 1.5 years of typical learning achieved in six weeks. Whether learning gains persist months later remains uncertain according to the authors. Implementation was not without challenges. Power and connectivity interruptions occurred frequently, especially during the rainy season, and many students needed time to create accounts and learn basic computer skills. The underlying manuscript by De Simone and co-authors from 2025 is listed as unpublished in VoxDev's references.

How this result compares

Compared with a database of education interventions in developing countries studied through randomized controlled trials, the program outperformed approximately 80 percent of these interventions according to VoxDev. Cost-benefit analysis linking learning gains to lifetime earnings yields ratios of 161 to 260. Both figures apply to the entire supervised program with teacher oversight and specially developed prompts. The Naija Teacher AI case study claims the platform reduces planning and grading time by 30 to 50 percent for teachers.

Where implementation stands

According to a case study published in May 2026, the pilot phase in the fourth quarter of 2025 trained 50,000 teachers and 2,500 master trainers. In August 2025, TRCN Registrar Soyombo announced the official launch of the platform for October 6. In September 2026, GMind co-founder Dr. Success Ojo presented a proposal at TRCN headquarters during a visit: a free training model with an AI specialist in each of Nigeria's 774 local government areas. According to Streamline, this proposal requires approval, while TRCN and GMind AI are already implementing Naija Teacher AI together.

What could threaten expansion

Streamline's analysis notes that free initial training and two months of platform access create a network but do not provide the funding, oversight, or evaluation needed for ongoing operation after launch. Audu Amba, national president of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, called for technology to strengthen teachers' professional role, combined with adequate investment in training, well-being, and professional development. Education State Minister Suwaiba Ahmad explained in an October 5, 2026 ICIR report that when used ethically and inclusively, AI can support personalized learning and reduce teachers' administrative burden. The authors of the Edo State study recommend testing a comprehensive implementation package with guidance on learning support, curriculum-aligned prompt collections, teacher training, monitoring routines, and support to maintain participation before scaling.
