The distribution of all 792 Solvatten solar water purification units in Kenya's Taita-Taveta County is complete, according to the NextEnergy Foundation's September 2026 update.
The expansion stems from a 2025 plan. Working with Community Action for Nature Conservation (CANCO), Solvatten aimed to increase the units from 214 to 792. CANCO had previously distributed 170 kits in Taveta sub-county by November 2024. By February 2026, nearly all kits had been issued. The foundation confirmed completion in September 2026.
A Region Facing Water Scarcity
Water comes mostly from Lakes Chala and Jipe (shared with Tanzania), the Lumi River, rainwater harvesting systems, surface runoff, and storage tanks. The water utility network is inadequate and unreliable. The four coastal counties—Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, and Taita-Taveta—face a combined daily deficit of about 327,000 cubic meters of water, according to The Kenya Times. Water Minister Eric Mugaa told the relevant senate committee on June 18, 2026, that the four counties need 512,000 cubic meters daily but receive only 185,000.
How the Solar Kit Works
The Solvatten kit opens like a book and produces 20 to 30 liters of clean, hot water for drinking, cooking, cleaning, and hygiene within a few hours of sunlight. Recipients were trained that purification takes 2 to 4 hours, an indicator shows safe water, and each kit yields 6,000 liters per year with a lifespan of 7 to 10 years. Some households generate more than 7,000 liters annually and save up to 675 hours yearly on water collection.
The project included training on safe water use and hygiene, plus monitoring of health, environmental, and social impacts. The foundation originally aimed to reach more than 2,500 people, save 1,800 tons of firewood over the kits' operational life, and reduce household CO2 emissions by about 700 metric tons yearly.
Kenya's Solvatten Record as of Early 2023
More than 230,000 people in Kenya alone benefited from Solvatten devices by January 2023, and nearly 600,000 globally, according to the founder. Solvatten itself set a goal to reach more than one million users by 2030.
From 214 to 792 Units: The 2025 Scale-Up
In Taita-Taveta, 170 kits were distributed by November 2024, nearly all by February 2026, and all 792 by September 2026. Households that already received units report lower fuel spending, and the project has reduced reliance on firewood.
